Slate

Slate is a traditional material that was previously used to decorate almost every roof. But today it is increasingly being replaced by new modern technologies, although slate is still in demand. This is especially true for colored slate, which is painted with a protective layer that preserves its appearance and prolongs its service life. Advantages of slate in its resistance to precipitation, temperature exposure and even radiation. But the main advantage of slate is its low price. Slate is the right choice for the older generation

It's time to replace the roof on my grandmother's old house. She is a very conservative person and does not welcome any innovations. Therefore, the question of choosing a roofing material disappeared immediately - only slate and no metal tiles. Slate is an affordable, low-cost material that provides comfort and ease of use.

Modern slate has good sound insulation, low thermal conductivity, it is fireproof. At my own risk, I ordered a slate not of a traditional gray color, but of brown. The White House under the brown roof is a classic of the genre! A few weeks later, the installation was completed. And now the new roof, in all its glory, appeared before the eyes of my grandmother. I realized that she liked the roof!

The only negative was that several sheets were broken in the stack. But this is nothing compared to long-term trouble-free operation (3 years).

Slate is cheap, but is it safe?
A comment
My parents have a house covered with old slate still made at the Union. In principle, they have no complaints about him, they exchanged a couple of slate for all the time, and then because the old tree branch fell on them, and what older people need, the roof does not leak and it's over. In Germany, it is forbidden to cover the roof with slate; even when dismantling, only robotic hands touch it, it is believed that the asbet used for its manufacture is not safe for health.

I myself have been doing roofing for a long time, but I only work with metal tiles. So it’s interesting whether the slate is harmful, because apart from this moment and the fact that it is cracking from a strong blow, I do not see any cons. Cheap and cheerful.
pros
inexpensive, good thermal insulation, durable
Minuses
afraid of bumps, there are doubts about safety for health

more than five years

Slate roof - reliable, noiseless and cheap
A comment
In early spring of last year, I decided to patch up the old roof at the country house. But having determined the amount of work, I realized that this would not help. The roof in 20 years of its existence has come into complete disrepair. Immediately the question arose of choosing a material for the coating.

The old roof was made of slate, and its “gray” look was tired of it. I wanted something new, beautiful. Neighboring cottages have long been decorated with metal tile coverings, and they looked pretty decent. Therefore, I decided to choose such a coating. I went to a neighbor to find out "what-why." While we were discussing with him the details of my future roof, it started to rain. And then I immediately realized that metal is not for me. Drops of rain (and he was not very strong) created the effect of drum roll.

Without further thought, he returned to the old, time-tested slate. The question of "grayness" was resolved simply. Now there is a choice of color slate. Moreover, for its coloring high-quality acrylic dyes are used, which, in addition to aesthetic, also have a protective function.
More than a year has passed. I am pleased with the roof in every way. Especially when you consider that it cost me almost 2 times cheaper than it would be metal.
pros
excellent sound and heat insulation, low cost
Minuses
heavy at work due to heavy weight
Term of use
more than three years
