How to choose a mattress for a bed, considering all the details

On how well we get enough sleep, mood and performance depend in many respects. And it’s very upsetting, having given the prescribed time to sleep, to feel broken and lethargic in the morning. This happens if the mattress is incorrectly selected. Perhaps it is worth discussing the question of how to choose a mattress for a bed - so that it is both comfortable and beneficial for the body.

Mattress for bed

We select the size of the mattress under the bed

Before buying a mattress, you need to very accurately measure the inner perimeter of your bed. We take out the old mattress, then take the tape measure from the bed. It may be tempting to measure a pulled-out mattress - it's easier. But this does not need to be done, since over time its dimensions change due to the inevitable deformation. By the way, when buying a new bed, there is no need to take measurements - all sizes must be indicated in the product passport.

Bed measurement
We measure the inner perimeter of the bed.

It happens that the measurements give non-standard results. For example, instead of 80 cm, the width is 79 or 83 cm. It should be remembered that a discrepancy of up to 1 cm is perfectly acceptable (with a bed size of 79 by 201 cm, boldly buy a standard mattress of 80 by 200 cm). But if the difference is 2 cm or more, you will have to purchase the product on order. Otherwise, the mattress either does not fit in the opening of the bed, or hangs in it. In the latter case, the cover quickly wears out, which often has to be changed.

When buying an American mattress for a bed made in Europe (or vice versa), be prepared for the fact that it will be quite difficult. European measures of length are based on centimeters, unlike American ones, in which the starting point is an inch. Take one of the standard American-sized bed mattresses - 60 by 80 inches.

If you convert inches to centimeters, we get numbers with fractions; 152.4 cm wide and 203 cm long. The standard two-meter length of a European product is initially shorter, and the width is very different. So, a mattress with a width of 160 cm will be too large, and the next size in the ruler is 140 cm. This is too small.

You can use one of three options:

#1. It’s easiest to buy a bed and a mattress from one manufacturer. They will definitely fit together perfectly.

#2. If it is not possible to purchase products of the same brand, then it is worth buying a mattress made in the same country in which the bed was made.

#3. You can make a mattress in size, contacting one of the manufacturers. Domestic factories willingly provide such a service (for a fee, of course).
By the way, many well-known European factories that produce expensive and prestigious products treat their customers with great attention. They have each model presented in all sizes (European and American). Moreover, the price of products is usually fixed. After all, this is a premium class, and so very expensive.

Spring or springless mattress

There are two main types of mattresses - with a spring block inside and without it at all. In turn, the spring blocks can also have a different design, based on which they are called dependent or independent.

Mattresses on springs

#1.Dependent spring blocks.

Let's start with the description of dependent spring blocks - this is what they are called because when you press on one of the springs, all the others also come into motion. This option is cheaper, but it has a minus. After some time, such mattresses are very stretched in the middle part - a kind of hammock is obtained. And if two are sleeping on such a bed, then the lighter spouse will inevitably slide into the one who is heavier. So it is better to leave the dependent spring structures for giving or other short-term use.

#2.Independent blocks are convenient but expensive.

Here, each spring, working separately from the others, is enclosed in a case made of a special fabric. A similar mattress serves for a long time, and no sagging is observed. That's just the price he has is quite high.

The cost of these mattresses depends on the number of springs per square meter of surface. The cheapest models have 250 springs per square meter of surface. More expensive designs have such springs 500 and even 1000.

Proportional to the price and number of springs, the orthopedic effect increases. It makes sense to buy such products for a bed on which you sleep constantly.

Each spring is sewn into the cover, as a result, such ribbons are obtained from which independent spring blocks are assembled.

Mattresses without springs

As the name implies, these are products without springs, they have a simpler device.

Springless device
Springless mattress device: 1 - cover; 2 - a layer of coconut coir; 3 - latex layer.

These products differ in the type of filler that is inside them. As mentioned above, expensive models, stuffed with natural materials, are more valued. This is latex with elasticity, elasticity and anti-allergenicity, as well as coconut flakes (coir), which can give the product rigidity.

Natural mattress filling

However, those inexpensive types of bed mattresses that are filled with artificial materials are quite popular. This, in particular, polyurethane foam (foam), artificial latex, as well as holofiber. Naturally, they will serve slightly less than products with natural materials inside. But their price is much lower.

Determined with the rigidity of the mattress

If you sleep on a too hard mattress, the body weight can be distributed unevenly. Especially unpleasant sensations in this case arise in the region of the shoulders and hips. After all, the biggest loads fall on these zones. And in the morning, waking up on such a mattress, you feel slightly beaten. However, when deciding which mattress is best to buy for a bed, you should not go to the other extreme. Too soft a product will also not give a full sleep - muscles and ligaments will be too tight.

If a person is thin and light, then a soft mattress will not hurt him - people weighing less than 55 kilograms will perfectly sleep on him. For those who have an average weight - from 55 to 90 kilograms - you can buy a mattress that has medium rigidity. But the "heavyweights" of 90 kilograms or more should look towards more rigid products. In this case, do not be afraid of discomfort during sleep - everything will be in order.

Mattress with different stiffness
1. Latex; 2. Coconut coir. In the photo you can see a two-sided mattress, both sides of which have different stiffness. This is achieved by the fact that the last layer on the one hand is a coconut coir, and on the other a layer of latex. Mattresses with different stiffnesses are both springless and with spring blocks (pictured). They can be useful to those who can’t determine exactly what rigidity he needs.

What fillers is better to use a mattress

It is the filler, located above the spring block and under it, that determines the characteristics of rigidity and elasticity of the mattress. The best are the "breathing" natural fillers, which also serve for a long time. However, they have a minus - a rather high price.

Stiffness often depends on the thickness and type of filler. One of the most commonly used natural materials in mattresses is coconut coir. It is often used to give certain rigidity.

Coconut Coir
If the thickness of this material is only one centimeter, then we will get the product with medium stiffness. But three centimeters of coconut coir will give a very tough effect.

Latex
Another popular natural filler is latex. Latex, unlike coconut, softens the surface and makes it more flexible and comfortable.

In addition to natural ones, many artificial fillers are also used. One of the most popular is polyurethane foam, commonly used as foam rubber. Moreover, premium and inexpensive budget products are made from it.

Foam rubber
However, in any case, foam rubber is the cheapest of fillers. It can have not only different thickness and density, but also workmanship.

Let us dwell on another filler, considered one of the most elite - this is holofiber. Despite the artificial origin, it is in no way inferior to natural fillers (and sometimes surpasses them). The homogeneous structure of the holofiber is created due to the large number of small spirals.

Faybertek
Products from it perfectly retain heat, allow air to pass through, and do not absorb moisture and odors. They do not lose their attractive appearance for a long time, do not deform.

The mattress is met by upholstery - we select the upholstery

When we come to the store, we first pay attention to the appearance of the mattresses. Here the manufacturers are trying to put their products in beautiful covers that are pleasant to the touch. In addition, it is important that the upholstery be strong enough to withstand years of use. The drawings and textures of mattress covers offered today sparkle with variety. Some can be turned on the wrong side, having a different color.

For sewing covers use strong natural (cotton, linen) or artificial (polypropylene, polyester) fabrics. Special impregnations increase strength and elasticity. There are anti-allergenic impregnations, as well as those that protect against dust. The final decision should be made based on your own requests.

Features of selecting a mattress for a double bed

Compared to single and one and a half mattresses, double products should be adapted to higher loads. After all, sleeping on them is not one person, but two. So here you need sufficient elasticity, rigidity and resistance to wear.

It is especially difficult in the case when the weight of the spouses owning the bed is different. We give an example. The wife, for example, is small and slender, and she weighs only 48 kilograms. And her husband, strong, tall and pumped up, has a weight of almost two times as much - 90 kilograms. It turns out that someone alone will always be uncomfortable to sleep. For example, buying a soft product can only make a fragile woman’s sleep comfortable. Well, a hard or semi-rigid mattress is only suitable for her husband, and she will not be very comfortable.

However, there is an opportunity to correct this situation. Indeed, a wide bed allows you to put two narrower ones instead of one large mattress.

This is most preferred:

  • Some isolation will make it possible not to wake your "half", tossing and turning in a dream.
  • You can purchase two mattresses of different stiffness, each of which will be optimally suited to the complexion and weight of the one who sleeps on it.
  • And let the small gap between the mattresses not bother you - it is easy to eliminate. It is enough to buy a thin wide mattress cover. He will combine the two boxes into one.

However, there are also such families where they don’t want to think about separate mattresses, preferring to sleep side by side, very close to each other. Well - spouses have a right to this. They can buy a model with two sides having different stiffness. Let one of them be moderately hard, and the opposite - quite soft. First you need to experiment by turning the mattress over. Then it can already be concluded on which side it is better for both spouses to sleep.
