I am directly involved in the repair of washing machines, so I strongly do not recommend using citric acid as a cleaning agent for limescale! Any scale should be removed mechanically, any repairman or man whose hands grow where necessary should do the job.
Citric acid can harm the washing machine, from it all the rubber components inside the machine become soft. So think about what will happen to the rubber casing after running boiling water with lemon? Each time to change it, quite an expensive pleasure. In addition, a dural cross is oxidized from it, other breakdowns can occur.

Of course, after such an attack of citric acid on the washing machine, the scale will not wake up, but it will not work after that.

If such a desire arose to clean the machine from scale, then buy a doctor ten.

I began to notice that after washing all the clothes in the literal sense of the word became “oak”. Additional rinsing, all kinds of conditioners, nothing saved the situation. I deduced that the problem could be related to the accumulated limescale in the pipes of the washing machine. At the same forum I found out that you can solve the problem with the most ordinary citric acid, I decided to try and see what comes of it.

In general, I poured a bag of citric acid into an empty drum (about 10 grams), and set the operating mode to boiling at 90 degrees. I liked the result, now clothes after washing have become much softer. I decided to continue to do this procedure every six months, for the sake of prevention. It helps, and the costs of cleaning limescale are cheap. So, I recommend trying, at least I saw the result!

don't know anything about side effects
